Based on album sales alone, Boyz II Men are the most commercially prosperous R&B group of all time. They’ve sold enormous quantities of albums and been a part of three of the longest-running number one pop singles in history. The members four-part harmonies blend so seamlessly that most of the general populace would be troubled to name any of the group’s individual members. And that’s no reflection on their skill as singers; Boyz II Men were among the first male urban soul acts to acquire the kind of hyper-technical melodious embellishments that is so fashionable nowadays Their early music was indebted to new jack swing, but the group quickly found their specialty in rich, soulful ballads, wherever their musical harmony* could be showcased to highest result. Boyz II Men might never replicate their unbelievable run of achievement during the beginning of the ’90s, but that’s a near-impossible task for anybody, even with the broad-based charm of their clean-cut romantic persona.
Boyz II Men were formed in 1988 at Philadelphia’s High School of the Creative and Performing Arts. Founding members Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson had been singing together for several years, but had trouble keeping a group together simply due to members graduating. Stabilizing the band with members, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, and bass vocalist Michael McCary. They named themselves Unique Attraction. In 1989, the members snuck backstage at a Bell Biv DeVoe concert and wowed Michael Bivins with an a cappella version of New Edition’s ” Can You Stand the Rain & and Bivins offered them a deal right there. Member Nelson departed soon after to pursue another path and the rest is history.
Boys II Men have sold over 60 million records worldwide and are now on tour in the U.S. Not bad for a group with humble beginnings as a high school quartet.
